Algarve Voted Top Place to Live and Invest 2019
The Algarve has come top of the Live and Invest Overseas top 10 list, beating off competition from regions in France, Bali, Slovenia and Brazil, while Portugal as a country has come 7th in the world in the International Living top 10 for 2019.
The rankings are based on a number of different factors and have been designed to help retirees choose the ideal place to live and invest in once they finish full time work.
The Live and Invest Overseas rankings are put together by Kathleen Peddicord and her team who grade a total of 21 destinations around the world in Latin America, Europe and Asia across 14 different criteria.
Kathleen Peddicord said of the list which saw the Algarve coming out on top: “Normally, we end up with more destinations in Latin America because it’s accessible and it can be sunny, warm and affordable — prime criteria for Americans going to another country,” said Peddicord. “But this year, our Top 10 list is very Europe-heavy. That’s because Europe right now is a relative bargain and the dollar remains very strong. You can take a certain level of comfort and convenience for granted in Europe and right now you can afford it.”
While Cascais was also featured in the top 10, at number 5, the Algarve was seen as the best place to retire to mainly because of the low cost of living in the region, especially for those buying property or having income in US dollars.
Other reasons that pushed the Algarve to the top included the exceptional year round weather, wide spread use of the English language in the Golden Visa programme which allows for easy residency in the country for those from outside the EU.
